Team Honda Motocross
Long Way Round
Overview
Since April 14, 2004 to July 29, 2004, McGregor, Boorman, motorcycle cameraman Claudio von Planta and crew Support traveled London and New York, through western and central Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia and Canada, for a cumulative distance of 18 887 miles (30,396 kilometers). The sections of the journey not made only by the passage of the motorcycle was 31 miles (50 km) through the Channel Tunnel, 580 miles (930 km) by train across Siberia, to avoiding imbalances in the Zilov, several river crossings and a short impassable section in eastern Russia, which took place on trucks, and a 2.505 miles (4.031 km) flight from Magadan in eastern Russia to Anchorage, Alaska.
After encountering numerous swollen rivers and a serious lack of functioning bridges during the journey along the route of the Bones of Magadan, the riders got their BMW motorbikes through some fairly deep rivers. However, the summer runoff Siberian winter was in full and after a valiant effort, the bikes eventually had to be loaded on the trucks of passing drivers and passed through some of the deeper rivers.
The trip visited twelve countries, starting in the UK, then passing through France, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, United States and Canada, ending in New York.
The team mainly stayed in hotels during Travel in Europe, North America and populated parts of Russia, but often had no choice but to camp after arriving in Kazakhstan and Mongolia. It took the time to visit a variety of landscapes and sights while traveling, including the Church of Bones in Czech Republic, the mask of sorrow monument (described as the "Mask of Grief" in the show) in Magadan, Russia and Mount Rushmore in the USA. Ultimately he came to New York in schedule and went to the city accompanied by a phalanx of bikers, including McGregor's father Jim and the team of Orange County Choppers.
Support crew
In addition to McGregor, Boorman and von Planta, the LWR team also had a support team including producers David Alexanian and Russ Malkin and cameraman Jimmy Simak. As part of the journey through Russia and Asia, who were also accompanied by security advisor and doctor, Sergey Vasily. The support team traveled in two SUVs Mitsubishi L200 Animal LWB 4x4 red a pick-up and a black Shogun DI-D Warrior Auto goods and generally followed a day behind cyclists to meet at border crossings and when circumstances dictate a higher level of teamwork was needed.
Previous leaving London, McGregor and Boorman trained specializing in a variety of disciplines. Motorcycles
McGregor advocated riding BMW motorcycles, while Boorman preferred that KTM, an Austrian specialist motocross and road bicycle manufacturer. It has also considered Honda bikes. After testing the off-road KTM BMW machines, McGregor Boorman agreed to the passion for KTM. However, after one of its pilots land specialist met with the team and learned LWR more about their intentions, ultimately declined to offer their bikes KTM, citing concerns that the equipment may fail. Boorman took the news badly as had been particularly attached to the idea of riding a KTM motorcycle on a trip.
BMW then contributed three BMW R1150GS Adventure motorcycle road. Bicycles appears a number of changes to help the team to the document and its mission. The bikes were also equipped with cameras, microphones and screen / viewfinder screens mounted on the dashboard. A custom GPS system with points allocated special interest in Mongolia and Siberia was crucial in areas without roads or signage.
Authorities
The first problem with customs officials came when the team crossed from the Czech Republic in Slovakia. They had left their notebook (A document that guarantees that the put expensive items in a country is not sold) to enter the Czech Republic, which could have meant the seizure of their cameras. A fee was paid and the team was allowed to continue with his team. A similar problem occurred at the intersection of Ukraine. Filming
Cameras onboard used by McGregor and Boorman have been designed specifically for the trip up Sonic Communications in consultation with the team during the preparation phase. Each pilot controlled both chambers, the first of which was built on their helmets and provide panoramic views from the front of the bike. The second chamber is removable McGregor and Boorman allowing to hold the camera or attach them to the front or rear of the bike depending on where they wanted to film. This was especially helpful as they could be withdrawn to prevent theft or damage, while bikes were ignored. Riding for UNICEF
The trip was also used to draw attention to the humanitarian efforts of UNICEF. During the trip, the team took the time to see and film something the work of UNICEF. The projects were visited an orphanage housing children in Ukraine affected by Chernobyl disaster, a climbing wall built at a youth center in Kazakhstan and an outreach project working with street children living in the heating of apartment blocks in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Accidents
The trip was not inevitable, no accidents and incidents. Ewan McGregor had petrol sprayed his (recently laser-corrected) eyes in the service stations on two occasions (one of them requires a trip to an optometrist in Ukraine). In the first case, Boorman tried to stop a fuel pump to put your finger over the nozzle, only to send a stream fuel directly in the face of McGregor on petrol secondly, McGregor spilled from reservoir while filling their own motorcycle. McGregor's forehead became very swollen around a mosquito bite in Kazakhstan (Claudio and Ewan joked that it could be a black widow spider bite) which required treatment and threatened to reduce the adventure. McGregor also showed his rear badly bitten and revealed that his penis had become swollen and painful during the trip, again due to mosquito bites.

Russ Malkin and Vassili rolled their SUV in Mongolia and were lucky to escape with minor injuries. Boorman very weak muscles in his left shoulder in Siberia and could not travel for several days (this occurred while they could not cross the river and were largely riding on local trucks and with their support team). McGregor was struck by a very young driver was Calgary and was lucky that his pack took the brunt of what might have been a very serious fact that the rear wheel had taken the full force of the impact. Motorcycle breakdown
The bikes also had its fair share of punishment. Cameraman von Planta bike had a broken frame after a bad fall in Mongolia and only work "Bodger" Boorman, using tire levers and cables, has allowed them to get the bike to the next town, which could be welded frame. However, after the welding arc frame was discovered that the antilock braking system was not working anymore and the whole bike had to be sent to Ulaanbaatar and sent home. A replacement was found locally (nicknamed "Red Devil"), a new Russian-made IZH Planeta 5 red, acquired for about $ 1,000. This cycle then developed gearbox problems. Two Mongolian shepherds happened to pass by and quickly repaired the cycle, laughing the fact that McGregor and Boorman were unable, despite its large assortment of tools. Ironically, the next area they had to drive through it was all wet and muddy, so that the heavy undrivable BMW motorcycles, McGregor and Boorman forcing human beings to handle and carry them long distances, while von Planta, now in the Metro much lighter, had no problem riding through it. The frame of the bicycle McGregor broke in two places in Siberia leaving them no choice to stop a passing truck which took them back for more welding Tynda.
One of the greatest fears of McGregor was taking water in its engine, that affected twice across the rivers of Siberia. However, pumping water from the engine and exhaust and the bike roared back into life. The bikes also sustained various problems after being incorrectly stowed during the flight of Magadan to Anchorage, which require a complete service to get to Alaska. Boorman suffered severe puncture tires only travel. All motorcycles suffered several blows of others, abrasions and cracks, however, bicycles ultimately survived the journey.
Music
Music in Long Way Round was selected by McGregor and Boorman. It features tracks from Stereophonics, Coldplay, Orbital, Massive Attack, Radiohead and others. The theme song was written and performed by Kelly Jones, Stereophonics singer. McGregor and Jones discussed ideas for the song by text message during the trip.
DVD
A two-disc DVD Week was launched as a mini-series on DVD in late 2005, consisting of seven episodes of 45 minutes each, amounting to about 400 minutes of material. The episodes do not have name, but cover some of the following sections of your trip:

Episode 2: London to Volgograd;
Episode 3: Kazakhstan;
Episode 4: Barnaul to western Mongolia;
Episode 5: Yakutsk western Mongolia;
Episode 6: Yakutsk to Magadan (the Way of the bones);
Episode 7: Anchorage to New York
The accompanying bonus disc contains several short films and deleted scenes.
Special Edition
A special edition DVD was released, extending the series to a total of ten 45-minute episodes over 3 discs (and no bonus disc of the original version), totaling some 540 minutes of material. Differences between the two versions are, especially at the beginning (the original version is condensed preparation trip in one episode, the special edition is more than two), and finally (Original version shows their journey from Alaska through Canada to New York in one episode, the special edition of more than two), the special edition also an episode devoted entirely to interviews and find the trip back a year later. The Special Edition episodes are also unnamed, but include some The following sections of your trip:

Other projects
McGregor, Boorman and the LWR team made a second trip known as Long Way Down, cycling from John o 'Groats in northern Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa in 2007. Like Long Way Round, visiting and awareness for UNICEF projects was an important part of the trip. Boorman competed in the 2006 Dakar Rally, which was filmed and broadcast in several countries such as Race to Dakar. Boorman also embarked on a journey from Ireland to Australia called by any means.
Inspiration
McGregor and Boorman were inspired by Ted Simon Travel book motorcycle Jupiter. Ted met in Mongolia.
