What causes wheel bearings to crack?

I'm buying July 1 Honda Element and tomorrow they are replacing the front wheel bearings for the front end was noisy when I can prove I was driving. The car only has 16k miles on it. What causes wheel bearings to break so soon? They are also doing an alignment, this could be the cause? If this is a warning sign? It is FWD not AWD.
