jeep wrangler reliability?

ok, for the longest time i have been debatign over the main categories.

1.speed
2.convertible
3.AWD/4WD SUV offroading

so then it hits me a jeep wrangler, offroadign and convertible!
but all my life my dad has been preachign to me the horrors of jeeps and how unreliable and how often they break. my family has a absolute bias of ford and mercury and Honda. he is not willing to let me get any other type of car. he HATES Chrysler, jeep, Chevy, and god forbid i should mention the name dodge.

so are jeeps really THAT unreliable? or do they break just as much as any other vehicle out there.

My last two vehicles have been jeeps, a Cherokee and a Wrangler. Honestly, they have been just as, if not more, reliable than any other vehicle I have owned. Trust me, I have had my share of cars, because I am hard on them. I have had everything from a Ford to a Subaru. From what I have learned in my past 30 years of experience with vehicles, is that it all comes down to how well you maintain them. This is so important to the life of a vehicle, I can't even begin to stress it strongly enough. I am talking about changing oil, lubing joints, and the like. If you do this, a jeep will last as long as any other vehicle out there.

You say, "All my life my dad has been preaching to me the horrors of jeeps and how unreliable and how often they break." It sounds like you dad grew up in the muscle car era. Back then brand loyalty was the norm. If you owned a ford, anything else was junk and vise versa. This all came about because of the battle for customers between Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet. The companies encouraged this kind of behavior with their advertising. When Jeep CJs first came out, they had a notoriously short wheel base, and if driven improperly could flip. That was many years ago, and since Wranglers have had their wheelbases stretched quite a bit. This is no longer a worry, although it is still a 4x4 and top heavy, because of their higher centers of gravity. You cannot expect them to handle like a car. The reason that people have the misconception that Jeeps are unreliable, is because a lot of people off road them. This is inherently going to be harder on the vehicle. It will put more stress on joints and the like. This will eventually lead to problems, but that is to be expected, because they are being asked to take a lot more abuse than a normal passenger car. On the plus side, if your Jeep does happen to break down, parts are a dime a dozen on ebay and in junk yards.

I don't want to be argumentative with your old man, but he is wrong in telling you that Jeeps are unreliable and dangerous. It simply isn't true of today's Jeeps. If that is what you want, get it. Make sure to do your homework though. If you are buying it used, make sure to talk to the previous owner. Find out how it was taken care of. If a young kid had it and beat it around, of course it most likely won't last. The way the vehicle was maintained is the key. If the person can show you that they religiously had the oil changed, the vehicle serviced and basically took good care of it, you most likely will get a a good vehicle.
